The Girls Update

We've kept you updated as to what Kevin has been doing in Japan.  But what about Sofia, Selah, and mommy?  Here is a recap of our 10 days without daddy.

Kevin update #7

Today (Thursday) we prayer walked in pouring rain in the location of the house church that we visited on Sunday. In the afternoon, due to the rain, we were not able to do 5min. English. Gary told us to try and get some shopping done. However, the place that we intended to go to (the Oriental Bazaar) was closed. In the evening, we had our Friendship Party. Thankfully, Sakura, a female college student that we had met on Tuesday came. A few of us had a really nice conversation with her. She seemed to listen well during the times we shared with her about the gospel. She has now made connections with Melissa Garcia (IMB journeyman) and she agreed to meet with Melissa for a Bible study. Praise God!

Tomorrow is an off day for us. We hope to visit a couple of places and then do some shopping. Japan is expensive! So, I hope we find some good bargains.

Kevin update #6

This morning (Wednesday) we visited the largest Buddhist Temple in Tokyo. The area of the temple has a long walkway filled with vendors. It reminded us of the money changers outside the temple in the Bible. These people are bound to this religion spiritually and economically. Only the power of God can change this. In the afternoon, we went back to the park we were at on Monday. It is a very large park and we covered the area in prayer. Very few contacts today, but we were able to hand out literature that God could use as a link in the chain. Tonight, Gary, Mark, Joni and I went to follow up with someone I had contact with on Monday, but it turned out that the person either gave me false information or I totally misunderstood him. He wrote down in Japanese an address for a restaurant that was far away, but he said that he worked there. When we arrived and inquired about him the people who worked at the restaurant did not know him. Strange, but as Gary said, that is the life of a missionary!

We plan to go to another area tomorrow to do more friendship evangelism and prayer walking. Then, in the evening, we will be holding a friendship party. Please pray that God would bring many to this party so that we can share more about Christ with them.

Kevin update #5

Today (Tuesday) was another good day. We spent most of the day at another park in Tokyo. We had several encounters with people. We did a combination of sharing tracts, sharing our testimonies, and sharing our smiles with the people today. Amazingly, even though there is often times a language barrier, God has given us plenty to talk about with people. We met a gal named Sakura today. She is a Japanese college student. She rode her bike up to Dale (a summer intern) and me, and asked why we were visiting the park. Talk about fishing and having the fish jump in the boat! We shared our reasons for being in the park, and had an opportunity to share with her about the Lord. We invited her to lunch with the whole group where everyone seemed to have a turn at sharing their story and/or witnessing to her. She stayed with us for a long, long time! To make a long story short, she is coming to our Friendship Party on Thursday night, and she has said that she would like to study the Bible with a IMB journeyman here. Please pray that Sakura, which means Cherry Blossom in Japanese, will bloom magnificently in the Lord by God`s saving grace.

Kevin Update #4

Today (Monday) we did a lot of walking (thus, prayer-walking), but before we did that we had a long train ride. We were in the northeast portion of Tokyo for most of the day. We bought our lunch at a nice grocery store and then walked to a park several blocks away. There, at the park, we ate our lunch, practiced sharing our testimonies, and prayed over the area. We then went to a combination Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine. It was really sad to see the ignorance and blindness that the enemy has caused in peoples lives. We then went to another shrine type place and prayed over it.

Incidentally, our focus passages this week are Psalm 24 and Psalm 25. In Psalm 24, there is a portion that says, "Lift up your heads, O gates. And be lifted up, O ancient doors. That the King of Glory may come in. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty. The Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates. And be lifted up, O ancient doors. That the King of Glory may come in. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord of hosts. He is the King of Glory."

I prayed over those verses several times today, to the point of tears at one point. I was reminded that there is not one dot on this whole planet that the Lord Jesus Christ does not say, Mine! Even in a Buddhist temple and in a Shinto shrine. May the King of Glory, and his wonderful kingdom rule soon in those dark places.

After visiting the temple and shrine we went to another park. This park was enormous! We divided up and went out to our divine appointments. All of us handed out tracts and most of us had at least one significant conversation. The Lord was at work today, and our prayer is that he will continue to be at work through us as we continue with park evangelism and prayer-walking in another park in the city.

Thanks for the prayers. The team continues to pray for boldness in sharing the gospel, oneness in purpose, fullness of the Spirit, and the surroundness of God`s presence and power

Kevin update #3

The Japan team had two house church experiences this Lords Day. The house church experience this morning was very American as we spent the morning with a lot of full-time missionaries, short-term missionaries, and summer volunteers. We were grateful to worship all together. The afternnoon house church experience was in the home of Japanese woman and her husband. Due to illness and who knows what she was the only Japanese believer in attendance at the house church. However, her testimony to the Lord`s grace in her life was very evident.

We have had the wonderful privilege of spending a lot of time with the Fujinos the last two days. They are tremendous hosts! It is evident that they love the work that God has called them to here, and while they are hopeful that many Japanese are going to come to the Lord, they do not sit back. This family is very active and purposeful in reaching out to the Japanese witht the gospel.

Tomorrow the team will be involved in park evangelism in the area of Tokyo that Gary Fujino oversees. We continue to ask God that he will give us divine appointments and that we will boldly share the gospel with those that we meet.

Kevin update #2

We had a good day of orientation. The IMB team really has their act together! We prayer walked a lot today. We also did a little bit of evangelism, but it rained when we were to begin 5-minute English, so we did more prayer walking. During one of our transition points Ling got separated from the group in the middle of a very busy and crowded train station. It was a stressful time for about an hour trying to find her. But, Ling was wise to stay near where she was separated. The Lord was gracious. It was a good learning experience. We did have the confidence that Ling knew how to get to the Hostel, but we had called and she had not gone there as yet.

We had a great dinner at the Fujinos. We are now enjoying hanging out with our dear friends.

I miss you guys and do appreciate your prayers. Please pray that God would give us good appointments!

Kevin Update #1

I received an e-mail from Kevin this morning.  He says:

"We got in just fine!  The plane trip and train rides were on time.  The plane trip was a little bumpy but other than that uneventful.  The team is tired and ready for a good night sleep.  We ate at a Japanese restaurant tonight.  I forgot what it was like to eat with chop sticks.  Jeepers, I am going to have to learn how to eat with those or you will not recognize me when I get home.  By the way, I also forgot what it was like to type on a keyboard in a foreign country.  Anyway, tomorrow is orientation, prayer walking, and friendship building.  Thanks for the prayers."

This morning Kevin took off on a jet plane to Tokyo, Japan. Thankfully we know when he will be back...May 31.

Kevin and 5 others from our church have gone with a purpose.  To glorify the Lord while engaging in friendship evangelism and prayerwalking.  

The Sheckler girls,  we'll hang around home for a few days then head off to Michigan to see family.

Family Time

It was a gorgeous day.  We needed the sunglasses.
Daddy and Sofia enjoyed birdwatching.  A favourite hobby of theirs.
Selah is learning to love the outdoors after 6 of her 8 months of life being cold and snowy.

More than anything we just really enjoyed being together as a family, enjoying God's creation, and relaxing.

A gift for each other.

We have given a gift to each other (for mom's day and dad's day) that arrived this past week. If you've ever been to our home you've noticed our bare wall in the entry way. The wall now displays a map of the world. Different coloured pushpins represent places we've either been, like to visit, the next trip or favourite spots. This map also represents one of our prayers.

God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us --- Selah.

Made it to 8.

This past month Selah and mommy didn't get much sleep.  Pain, nasal congestion, and coughing made for a couple weeks of restless nights.  But we made it through and Selah has two bottom teeth to show for it.   

Selah is such a sweet baby.  She loves to clap her hands, dance or "bobble" to music, and chase after toys.  You can't call it crawling but she definitely can make it across the room by scooting on her bottom or rolling.  And boy does she love to eat.  Any vegetable will do and a snack of cheerios is such a wonderful treat.  We have to keep those chubby cheeks chubby.:)

Don't forget to...

...stop and smell the flowers.  Oh, how glorious it is to be able to get out and enjoy God's creation.  Our Spring weather continues to be like a roller coaster.  One day it's 75 degrees, the next day 55 degrees.  We have sunny days and we have rainy days.  So when the sun is shining we go out and enjoy it.  Are you enjoying your day?

Different. Same.

Sofia is our brown-eyed, brown hair daughter born in California.  Selah, our blue-eyed, blondie was born in Illinois.  Their differences, however, have no bearing on our love for them.  They are our children.  Our love for them is truly the same.  A love that is unexplainable.  A love that is deep.  A love that brings us joy.

Is that not true of God's love for us?  He loves us no matter the colour of our eyes, skin, or hair.  He loves us whether we were born in the U.S.A. or another country.   God's love is for all.    Different people.  Same love.

What's Sofia up to these days?

A couple of weeks ago we signed Sofia up for gymnastics class through the park district.  She loves it.  Class is every Friday morning for an hour.   Sofia enjoys learning how to tumble and walk on the balance beam but her favourite aparatus is the trampoline.  No surprise there!

Does she look like him or her?

Take a look at Selah's pic in the previous blog.  Do you think she looks like Keri or Kevin?  That's Kevin with his twin sis, Kerri.  And Keri is with her mom.

Selah at seven months!

Selah is almost on the move.  Oh no!  With your first child you can't wait until they start to crawl and walk.  With your second child, it's like just be our "baby-baby" and let us hold you and cuddle you.  

That's not for Selah.  She wants to get going and we believe she soon will be.  When sitting up she likes to fall forward so she can end up on her belly.  From there she uses her rolling techniques to move toward her toys.  And to her annoyance, when she scoots, she usually ends up going backward and not forward.  

"Da-da", "ma-ma" and "na-na" are pretty much the extent of her vocab.  Her greatest way of communicating is with her smile.

This song is sung with much spirit by millions of fans each year during the 7th inning stretch of a baseball game.  Of course as a family who loves baseball we've made sure Sofia knows this song.  Did you know, however, that there are two verses?

An orchestra of sounds.

This morning around 11:00 a.m. I found myself sitting on the couch just listening to life around me.   Each individual sound I heard brought comfort.  

Clothes tumbling in the dryer.

Pitter-pattering of rain.

Claps of thunder.

Selah babbling with a squeal here and there as she rolled on the floor.

Sofia singing and humming as she played in the toy room.

Together the sounds, underscored by the quietness of all else, created a music that was simply beautiful.

A blessed Easter!

Easter morning we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord and Savior with our church family by eating brunch together then worshipping through song and the teaching of His Word. 

The afternoon was spent in the home of our dear friends, the Gosherts.  We ate a delicious Easter dinner then had a Easter Basket hunt down in the basement (the foot of snow on the ground dictated the necessity of being inside).  Each person (mommies and daddies were included) hunted for their basket full of goodies and a Bible verse.  Once everyone found their basket we sat together and from youngest to oldest each person read their Bible verse.  Strung together the verses shared the Easter story from Matthew 28.   It truly was a blessed Easter.

White as Snow!

Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool (Isaiah 1:18).

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith (Romans 3:23-25a).

It's a perk!

Being a stay-at-home mom has a lot of perks.  Of course, the obvious and the best is just being there moment by moment with my girls.  But one perk I didn't realize I would have is that I get to watch March Madness.  You got it!  March Madness.  It's great.  No more coming home from work and watching the highlights on the news.  No more toggling between my work on the computer and the NCAA website.  The t.v. is on, the channel is CBS, and me and the girls are enjoying some great basketball together.  

Family Time at Fairlanes

We had a great time as a family this weekend.  Uncle Kirk and Aunt Tamra flew in from SoCal.  Aunt Kelli, Uncle David, and cousins Caleb and Hannah drove over from Michigan.  For some good ole fashion fun we went to Fairlanes Bowling Alley Saturday afternoon.  We had a blast.  It was Sofia's first time bowling.  She enjoyed the first four frames then wanted to go play video games.  Selah, she cheered us all on from her carseat.

And her eyes are blue!

Yesterday Selah turned six months old.   She hasn't quite mastered sitting up by herself so pillows around her are a must.  We began feeding her food a couple of weeks ago.   And her eyes, well, we think we can now say without a doubt she will be our blue-eyed daughter.  

Kids DO say the darndest things.

Any parent could simply blog all day long the millions of darndest things their kids say.  Here are a couple of Sofia's from this past week.

1.  "Hey mommy, CHUCK-A-JESUS!".  This was said as we were driving past a Chuck E. Cheese.  We have yet to visit one but it is familiar to Sofia because they sponsor PBSKids.  

2.  As we were walking through the mall, Sofia pointed to a store and said, "Look, that store is on t.v.  It's the necklace store."  Kay Jewelers marketing department seems to be doing their job.

3.  We were all sitting at the dinner table.  Kevin and I were having a conversation and he said, "Ain't that the truth."  Sofia piped in, "That's not the truth, daddy.  Jesus is the truth.  And hope, light, and love."   Now that makes a mommy proud.

This little light...

About a month ago I asked that you pray for Cyd Mizell.  Cyd was living in Afghanistan and shining the light of God while working for an NGO.  On January 26th she was kidnapped.  Today I received word that Cyd, along with her driver, were killed.  Details are currently not known.

What is known is that their families need our prayers.  Cyd's driver, Mohammed Hadi, leaves behind his wife and five children ages 6-15.   Cyd leaves behind her parents and family.

Cyd's light to the people of Afghanistan may have been snuffed out here on earth but the source of her light continues to shine bright so all peoples may know HIM!

Be Staggered

Did you see it?  Last week we were treated to a fairly rare occurrence in the night sky.  On Wednesday evening there was a total lunar eclipse.  A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes into Earth's shadow and is blocked from the sun's rays that normally illuminate it.  

My family saw the end of the eclipse and we were all amazed.  After seeing the sight of the moon that evening, and the star Regulus and the planet Saturn which were noticeable too, I thought of Psalm 19:1-2, 

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.  Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge."

God, in his greatness, displays his glory in the heavens.  Think of it, day after day, and night after night the heavens and the sky declare His beauty, His faithfulness, and many other awesome attributes.  God is staggering.

Is your God too small?  Are you too overly impressed with man?  I suggest taking a trip outside and look up to the heavens at God's handiwork.  By God's grace, it could be just what you need to magnify the Lord as He deserves.  

It's the thought, right?

Last week in celebration of Valentine's Day Kevin gave each of his girls a gift.  For Selah and Sofia --- a balloon.  For me, his wife --- 2 dozen beautiful roses.  The girls play with their balloons everyday.  My roses, well, they ended up in the laundry room.  Needless to say, my husband is very allergic to flowers.   

And now she's five!

Five months old that is.  We are so in love with our daughter, Selah.  She loves to laugh and is enamored by her big sister, Sofia.  A couple of weeks ago she began rolling from her back to her belly.  Yesterday she rolled from her belly to back...we'll see if that was just a fluke.   Selah loves to have conversations with daddy and mommy(there's a lot of babbling going on in this house) and enjoys hanging out in her exersaucer.

This afternoon Daddy and Sofia went out back and built themselves a snowman.  Sofia wants to make a "boy" one tomorrow.

Snow Day, part 2!

Kevin enjoys shoveling snow. And today he is doing plenty of it. He came home from work around 1 p.m. Before he could pull the car into the garage he had to shovel about a foot of snow.

Now 1.5 hours later he is out there shoveling again because another 3 inches has accumulated.


He also shoveled a path to our frontdoor. (By the way, he got that hat while in Russia for ISP '02. Who knew it would become more than a souvenir?)

Snow Day!

Okay, so my girls don't go to school but if they did today would be a snowday for them. We are expected by day's end to have an accumulation of 10 inches of snow to add to the 10 in. already on the ground. And this snow (wet and heavy) is "snowman making" snow. We may try to make one after the storm passes. In the meantime, we are having pajama day. Sofia wanted to be burrowed with her stuffed animals. Then, of course, she wanted to smother Selah with all kinds of stuff but I limited her on what she could lay on top of her.

(Please continue to uplift Cyd in your prayers. May the Lord use this event to "free" her captors.)

Quite a statement.

I met Cyd Mizell during my time in Turkey. To me, she was a very wise and caring person. After I received word of her kidnapping this past weekend, I, of course, was very troubled. At the same time, however, I have been able to pray for her with a confidence in knowing that God is with her.

News reports today stated that 500 Afghan women protested on the behalf of Cyd. The women, many clad in their burqas, were pleading to officials to make every effort to find and free Cyd. One news item reported how a woman got permission from her husband so she could join the protest. Obviously, Cyd was more than a teacher to these women. She was a friend and an advocate. You don't protest for just anything and anyone. Her impact on these women and to us all is quite a statement.

Keep praying!!!

PRAYER NEEDED!!!

This beautiful american woman inside and out has been abducted in Afghanistan. She has been working with an aid organization teaching english and embroidery to women. Please pray for her release.

Meanwhile Selah is...

So while Sofia and mama where outside in the snow (see below post) Selah was inside the nice warm house with daddy. A couple of weeks ago we introduced her to the exersaucer. She loves it!

Snow but no snowman.

Today's temperature is supposed to reach a high of 28 degrees. This is really warm considering the temps have been hovering around 0 to -20 degrees this past week because of the windchill. So being that it was on the warm side I figured it would be a good morning to take Sofia out and make a snowman.
Unfortunately the snow on the ground is too fluffy (this California girl is learning that there are different types of snow). It just won't stick in order to make a snowball. After about 15 minutes outside, however, Sofia was ready to go inside. So was her mama!

Parenting...the ugghhs!

All those cliches are true. As a single person you have great opportunity and time to serve God. As a married person you learn the intimacy of God's love. And as a parent, well, you learn about God's unconditional love and find yourself saying sorry to Him quite a bit more in regards to the way we've acted as a child of God.
I must confess that my 3 yr. old daughter, Sofia, can drive me crazy sometimes. My most frustrating moments with her are when she seems to not listen when in reality you know she did. Kevin and I don't only say, "Listen" but we say "Listen (while pointing to our ear) and obey (while pointing to our heart)".
It is very sobering to us that our teaching and training is not done so we may have a good little girl. It is so that someday our daughter will be an adult who loves the Lord HER God with all of her heart, mind and soul. So, in those moments, days, when I am frustrated I have to turn to my God and say, "I'm sorry for those times I didn't listen or heard but didn't obey, now PLEASE HELP ME!" . And of course, looking into those brown eyes helps soften those moments as well.:) Oh the ugghhs of parenting!

Date with Daddy

Sofia and I had a great time at the show on Friday afternoon. We watched the latest Veggie Tale Movie. It was Sofia's first movie in a theater. We thought we were going to be the only ones viewing the show, but ten minutes into it another family came in. We still had a lot of fun!

Four months!

Today we are amazed that Selah is four months old! She is such a dear. The greatest blessing has been her sleeping habits. For the past seven/eight weeks she sleeps an uninterrupted 10 hours every night. Last night Sofia was so excited that Selah is now sleeping in the same room with her. Here is a pic of Sofia reading Selah a story and the other one is Selah waking up this morning(no, she doesn't miss a meal). Thank you Lord for our precious daughters.

We were very blessed to be able to spend time with famiy over the holidays. Christmas was spent in Michigan and New Year's in Oklahoma. Here is a pic of Selah with her Great Gramma (Keri's gramma) or G.G. as Sofia affectionately calls her. G.G. is a beautiful 84 year old woman who faithfully continues to teach Sunday School and is a prayer warrior. She is a testimony for God's glory and we in turn give God glory that our girls have the blessing of being her great-grandaughters.
