We all do it. Especially parents of more than one child. We DREAM of taking a picture with all of our children looking at the camera and giving us their best smile. Not a cheesy smile but one that shows how happy they are to be right where they are at that appointed time. HA!
Needless to say, this past Saturday I did some dreaming. I dreamt that I would take the cutest picture of my three kids atop a John Deere tractor. Oh boy. What was I thinking?
This is what I got. In this first picture Selah is crying because Sofia got to hold the steering wheel. Isaiah isn't very happy because he was being squished by big sister. And Sofia. well, she wasn't crying or complaining at all because she was in her own world not paying attention to brother or sister. Ugh!
So after failing to get the dream picture I settled for these two pictures. Here are the girls with "smiles".
While the boy was here and not too happy about it all. You can't really tell but he was in the middle of crying.

Fall Fun on the Farm(s).
Every October we enjoy going to a couple of farms for some fall fun as a family.
On Saturday, October 22, we went to Stades Farm for their Shades of Autumn Festival. It was a gorgeous sunny day with temps in the 50s. We ate roasted corn, enjoyed the rides, ran through kiddie hay mazes, played in kernals of corn, watched in amazement as they shot pumpkins 300 feet plus from a cannon, and simply enjoyed the day together as a family.
This past Saturday Kevin was in the U.P. fishing with his dad so I took the kids by myself to Royal Oak Farm. We have enjoyed going apple picking here for the past four years. Again, we were blessed with a sunny day but it was a bit cooler with temps only in the 40s. This was Isaiah's first year picking apples. After picking apples we headed to the play area to enjoy a snack of apple cider doughnuts, apples, and apple cider.

His daddy.
"In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge."
[Proverbs 14:26 ESV]
His daddy loves the Lord with all of his heart, mind and soul. His daddy seeks wisdom from Scripture and daily prays for his son.
His daddy's eyes are fixed on Jesus. His daddy loves him.
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

Earthquakes and me.
Growing up in Sacramento, CA earthquakes were talked about but not felt much. My first memory of being in one was my freshman year of college at UC San Diego. As the earth rocked because of the Whittier earthquake, I simply stayed in bed and slept through it.
The next earthquake I remember was the Bay Area one in 1989. This is quite memorable to me because it took place during the World Series.
In the 1990s, however, earthquakes became more real. I had just begun working full-time at Cal Baptist in June 1992 when the Landers earthquake struck. Destruction took place in an area very familiar to me because I had interned at a church in 29 Palms. In January 1994, I was once again rocked in the early morning by an earthquake that took place in Northridge. Just the night before I had been driving on the freeway that collapsed. I was also given opportunity to serve people with the American Red Cross in the days following that earthquake.
It wasn't until August 1999 that the devastating destruction of life from an earthquake became more of a spiritual hurt for me. I had been living in Istanbul for just a little more than a month. Just long enough to have learned some Turkish phrases, get over major cultural shock, and get to know my neighbours. On August 17, again early in the morning, I was woken by the shaking of my bed from an earthquake. This one, however, made me jump up and seek the shelter of the door frame. I had never felt one this strong before. And it lasted for what seemed forever!
When it stopped I simply went back to bed.
But for thousands and thousands of Turks, they did not go back to bed. Thousands died. Thousands and dare I say, millions, began living a life filled with fear.
It wasn't until I began receiving phone calls and e-mails from friends in the U.S. that I realized how horrific this earthquake had been. CNN was bringing them news that I had yet to receive. It was time to react.
For the next couple days, months and even the next year most of my life centered around meeting the needs of those affected by the earthquake. The epicenter was about an hour east of where I lived and was measured to be 7.6 magnitude on the richter scale. The final estimation of loss of life was close to 30,000 people.
30,000 people. Gone. Unprepared.
The good news is that God is God and he saw fit to use this disaster for His Glory. The efforts of earthquake relief brought about the sharing of the gospel to those who had yet to hear.
So in light of today's news I am driven to my knees. I mourn the loss of life. And yet I praise him with the hope that His Glory will once again be shown.

Momma in the pics.
I recently became aware of the fact that I have many a picture of our children and quite a few pictures with their daddy. I don't, however, have many pictures of me with my kids. This is simply because I am the picture taker in the family.
Before we headed out for a family outing today, I had Kevin take a picture of me with my precious, precious children. Sofia will be turning seven in just a couple of weeks. Selah is four years old and Isaiah is 16 months old.

Together.
The day after our wedding we boarded a plane for Shannon, Ireland. It was a most amazing honeymoon. This picture doesn't say much about the place we visited but it was on this night, October 19, eight years ago...ahhh....our first sit down dinner together, alone, as man and wife.

The school playground.
When I was a little girl in 1st grade I LOVED the monkey bars at school. My best friend, Kelly who lived next door to us, and I would spend every recess on the bars. We would spin, drop (remember the cherry drop?), and sometimes fall. Interestingly enough Kelly had a pretty bad fall off the bars during a.m. recess and I had a bad one during the afternoon recess. Both of us skinned our chins up real bad and had a tooth knocked out.
So when Sofia shared with me on the first day of school how much she LOVED the bars at school, I was not surprised. It has been fun sharing with her my experiences and warning her about "falling".
Last weekend we had some amazing weather. I thought a great outing would be to the school playground. Sofia loved showing us her tricks, Selah loved trying to do what her big sister does at school, and Isaiah, well, he enjoyed the last of an icee that I had bought for the kids to share.
Playgrounds are so much fun. Let's just hope I don't receive a phone call from the school nurse stating Sofia has fallen and broken a limb.

Two wheels!
Being that Selah got the hang of riding her bike without training wheels in about all of two minutes, I wonder why I didn't take them off earlier.
Maybe because she was three years old.
Maybe because I was lazy.
Maybe because I was afraid she would fall and hurt herself.
It doesn't matter now.
Selah turned four years old a couple weeks ago.
I took the training wheels off.
She has fallen but has gotten right back up.
Sofia got Selah going and ran behind her.
Next thing we know.....Selah is off and riding all by herself!!!
Way to go Selah! We are so proud of you.

One proud boy.
Isaiah loves, loves, loves stacking. He loves to stack blocks and his favourite things to stack....cans from mommy's cupboard.
Last night I found him doing this.
The smile and clapping hands show how proud he was of himself. And mommy and daddy are pretty proud of him as well.
This most likely won't be the most dangerous thing he will ever do but it does scare me because oh boy would it hurt if a can landed on his toes.

Window of Celebration.
Selah was very sick on her birthday. It was so sad. She had been running a fever for four days by Saturday (10th) and just wasn't getting any better. We had been to the dr. but at that point they said it was simply viral.
As a family we tried our best to make it a happy birthday for our four year old. Daddy made pancakes in the shape of an "S" and "4" but only one bite would be eaten.
PopO. flew in from California that afternoon and brought quite a few presents to be added to the ones sent from Gramma and others. But they just sat on the table.
Mommy baked ice cream cone cupcakes. They, too, just sat there.
Then, finally, around 6 p.m. Selah seemed to have a burst of energy. Not knowing how long it would last, I had the family stop what they were doing and we all gathered around the table to sing to the birthday girl, have her blow out her candles, and open presents. (She didn't have any clothes on due to the high fever.)
Thirty minutes later our precious Selah was back to not feeling well. The next day she looked like this.
So glad we were able to enjoy the small window of celebration. And very thankful that the Monday before her birthday and before she got sick that we had taken the family up to Apple Holler so Selah could ride a pony. That was her birthday wish. And from the picture you could see that she did have a happy birthday.

My kiddos keep growing.
Each dr. check-up I enjoy finding out the stats of my kids height and weight. It amazes me how much our little ones grow in such a short amount of time.
Isaiah is 15 months old now. Here is how he compares to his sisters at that age.
15 month stats
Sofia 20 lbs 6 oz. 30.75 in.
Selah 20 lbs 7 oz. 30.5 in.
Isaiah 25 lbs 4 oz. 33 in.
Selah just turned four years old. Here is how she compares to Sofia at four.

The birthday gift of prayer.
Today we celebrate Selah's fourth birthday. We are amazed at how much she has grown this year not only physically but emotionally (goodbye terrible threes!) and socially. Even her understanding of spiritual matters is beginning to deepen.
We would love all of our family and friends to join us for cake and ice cream but it's not possible. So, as we do each year, join us in praying for Selah.
Pray....
- Selah will continue in good health and grow developmentally.
- Selah's relationship with Sofia and Isaiah will deepen.
- Selah’s love for singing will always be a sweet sound in our Savior’s ear.
- Selah will continue to be curious, and that someday her curiosity will be satisfied by knowing Jesus.
- Selah, whom God put on this earth for His enjoyment, will bring glory to God by enjoying Him.

Effects and Attachments
This is my brother, Kirk, with his little boy Ezekiel. Ezekiel has been in NICU for 16 days. Praise God his body is healing and in due time my brother and his wife, Tamra, will be taking Ezekiel home.
No doubt this has been a very difficult time for our family. However, our family has seen and experienced hardships physically, emotionally, and spiritually over the years and we can confidently say that God is good, God is our rock and God is love. He has been faithful to provide, he has been faithful to encourage, and he has been faithful to heal. And because of the many things HE has done, we give him the glory and honor he deserves. We also look to him in this trying time knowing once again that He is our strength. And that is exactly what the name Ezekiel means, "God's strength."
I want to share a couple things that Kirk has shared in his updates.
Effects
As I wash my hands to see Ezekiel so I don't spread any bacteria, it is like asking Jesus to cleanse me of my sins so I don't effect my wife, kids, family friends and community. Jesus cleanses our sins white as snow. Cast our transgressions as far as the east is from the west.
Attachments
Ezekiel has been attached to needle lines, monitors, and a vent going into his mouth and into his lungs to help him breathe. Because of this I am not able to hold him. Isn't this true of our heavenly Father? He wants to hold us but we have too many attachments to this world. It's time to pray for healing. Healing of our sin.
I pray these words encourage and challenge you as they have done for me.

IT happened!!!!
Yes, it happened. Something most every family experiences at least once in their lifetime. I had been waiting for this day. Actually I thought we might have escaped it being that the girls are now six and half and almost four. But what was I thinking?
The other night I was washing dishes. Selah comes running down the stairs with a HUGE smile on her face and very proudly says to me:
This mommy had a million and one thoughts running through her head but I actually managed to be calm and say,
Selah looks at me with disbelief then you could see reality cross her face.
Sofia then comes running down the stairs,
For the next few minutes I had some great dialogue with my girls about knowing and understanding right from wrong, owning up to doing wrong, accepting responsibility, seeking forgiveness and accepting forgiveness.
As for Selah's haircut? It isn't very noticeable. The right side is about two inches shorter when you pull both side hairs straight but you can't tell so much because of her curls.

Back to School (1st grade this year!)
Yesterday our little sweet pea began first grade. This will be quite an adjustment for us all as she will be in school all day.
Sneak preview was held on Tuesday. This allowed for us to go see her new classroom, meet her new teacher, and drop off the school supplies.
The first thing Sofia says to me when I woke her Wednesday morning was, "Mommy, I said I wasn't going to miss you but I am." Then we both began to cry. A few minutes later, she looks at me and says, "I'm okay now. I'm ready to go to school."
After a time of family prayer, we headed outside for the first day of school pics.:)
Then it was time to go to the bus stop. This year Sofia will get on the bus at 8:15 a.m. and return around 3:45 p.m. The best part about the bus stop is hanging out with our neighbourhood friends.
We as parents look forward to the growth in our daughter this year. Here's to a great year!
